Abstract
The brushing action in relation to the keratinization of the human gingival epithelium was studied by
ears of cell smears stained with Pharr modification of the Papanicolaou¢¥s method in IO male students(ages
inging from 23 to 25), each one showing normal gingiva. The results were as follows.
1) Differential counts of the five types of epithelial cells in each stage.
a) Before the beginning of the experiment:
Yellow staining cell without nuclei: 28.5%
i;, Yellow staining cell with pyknotic nuclei: 36.3% .Y
Red staining cell with nuclei: 30.7%
Red and green staining cell with nuclei: 1.2% Green staining cell with nuclei: 3.3%
b) -After 2 weeks of mechanical rest:
tiXa ¢¥ Yellow staining cell without neclei: 19. 1%
¢¥. Yellow staining cell with pyknotic nuclei: 33.4% r_
Red staining cell with nuclei: 39.7%
Red and green staining cell with nuclei: 2.2% Green staining cell with nuclei: 5.6%
0 After 3 weeks of brushing:
w
Yellow staining cell without nuclei: 35.7% Yellow staining cell with pyknotic nuclei: 37.6% Red staining cell with nuclei: 23.6%
Red and green staining cell with nuclei : 1.1% Green staining cell with nuclei: 2.0%
In all cases more, keratinization was.noticed on the smears taken after tooth brushing than ¢¥non-tooth brushing.
